Senate Dems Pledge To Protect Social Security

Senate Majority Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said Monday that his party will continue to fight the Republicans’ “ridiculous idea” of privatizing Social Security.
“Social Security has not contributed a penny to the deficit and it’s in great shape for the next few decades,” Reid said.
At an event entitled “Hands Off Social Security,” Reid and Senators Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Al Franken (D-Minn.), and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), said social security should not shoulder the responsibility of the U. S. deficit.
“We always have to remember that Social Security is backed by the full faith and credit of the United States government,” Harkin said. “As long as the government continues, Social Security will continue.”
Reid acknowledged that even though the government is in a tight spot financially, it has a responsibility to those eligible for Social Security.
“Seventy-five years ago, our nation made a promise that if a person worked hard and contributed to a little fund, America would make sure you could retire in dignity,” Reid said. “That promise is called Social Security, and I believe it is the most successful social program in the history of the world.”
