While conservative pundits like George Will and Bill Kristol have urged Mitt Romney to release additional tax returns, real estate mogul Donald Trump believes the Republican candidate should withhold them until President Barack Obama releases his college transcripts.
Trump, who endorsed Romney and has participated in the campaign’s fundraising effort, delivered the advice during an appearance Monday on Fox and Friends.
During his public flirtation with a Presidential run last year, Trump similarly said that he would only be willing to release his returns in exchange for the college records. Trump’s time in the 2012 limelight was also punctuated with requests for Obama to release his long-form birth certificate.
When asked earlier this month about the request, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney stated that the idea of a swap was “preposterous.”
“The President’s record on transparency is extremely sound. He has provided the kind of documentation that candidates for President have now, by tradition, provided for 30 years,” Carney said. “And he believes it’s the right thing to do.”
