Voters in the 12 states considered up for grabs this election season trust President Barack Obama over Mitt Romney on Medicare, according to a newly released Gallup poll conducted Sept. 11th through the 17th.
50 percent of respondents said that they trust the President more when it comes to addressing issues facing the entitlement program while 44 percent of respondents said they’re more optimistic about Romney.
Via a 51 to 46 percent margin, more swing state voters say that Obama has presented specific Medicare plan than Romney.
Medicare has been a major point of contention in the leadup to November 6th.
The Obama campaign has targeted the fiscal blueprint presented to Congress by Romney’s Vice Presidential candidate Paul Ryan, saying that plans to subsidize seniors’ medical coverage at a fixed level amounts to “voucher-care.”
In response, the Romney-Ryan ticket have charged that they are making entitlement cuts in an effort to preserve Medicare for future generations. They’ve claimed that Obama is weakening the system by cutting $716 billion through the health care reform law, a level of savings that the administration notes were found among doctors’ reimbursements and not recipients’ benefits.
The poll was conducted among a random sample of 1,216 respondents drawn from Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin.
