Komen Walks Back Decision To Defund Planned Parenthood
Following mounting pressure from women’s groups and several lawmakers, Susan G. Komen for the Cure has reversed its decision to cut grant funding to Planned Parenthood.
“The events of this week have been deeply unsettling for our supporters, partners and friends and all of us at Susan G. Komen,” the group said in a statement. ”We have been distressed at the presumption that the changes made to our funding criteria were done for political reasons or to specifically penalize Planned Parenthood. They were not.”
Komen, however, made clear in its statement that the move to cut grant funding was not politically motivated nor was it specifically directed towards Planned Parenthood, but rather was a change in policy that would prohibit the charity from working with organizations under investigation. Currently, House Republicans are investigating how Planned Parenthood allocates the funding it receives.
According to the statement, Komen will amend its new policy to apply solely to investigations that are “criminal and conclusive in nature and not political.” As a result of this policy change, Planned Parenthood will continue receiving money from existing grants and would once again become eligible for future funding.
