Pentagon Confident In Iraqi Security Capabilities In Face Of Renewed Violence

The Defense Department reaffirmed their confidence in Iraq’s security capabilities Tuesday, one day after the country suffered its most violent day since 2009.

“We believe that the Iraqi government is capable of providing for its own security and addressing internal threats that it’s facing, from al Qaeda or from other groups perhaps,” DoD press secretary George Little said during a briefing at the Pentagon.

Added Little, “the level of violence is a potential challenge to the Iraqi government, but we’re confident they can take care of business.”

On Monday, an outburst in violence across Iraq left approximately 113 dead and 250 wounded in what is believed to be a new al Qaeda offensive.
