Gay Rights Groups Condemn Trayvon Shooting
A coalition of gay rights organizations have issued a joint statement decrying the Trayvon Martin shooting as “a wakeup call to the enduring cancer of racism and racial profiling.”
“The pain his family continues to endure transcends communities and unites us all,” the statement reads. “Every person, regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation or gender identity, must be able to walk the streets without fear for their safety.”
The statement attempts to strike a tone of solidarity, noting that many within the LGBT community “have a great deal of experience grappling with the role bias plays in violent crimes against our communities.”
Signatories include GLAAD and the Human Rights Campaign, two of the country’s most prominent LGBT organizations, as well as nearly two dozen others.
